Response to Blog Spammers

August 27th, 2012

I realize I’m having too much fun with this, but I determined to draft a letter of response to all my blog spaming friends. Not wanting to write each one personally, I’ve written something generic. They should understand, since that’s what they do. Moreover, I want to use their vernacular, all the better for building a bond. To do that, I’ve used the very phrasing excerpted from the spam letters quoted in the last blog. Those quotes are in red below, with the occasional pronoun adjustments made, and bridges added in black. Let me know what you think; I do want to be as clear as they are, as polite, beneficial, delicious, and magnificent. As always, thanks a lot again for a lot of things.

Loved your magnificent blog. I used to collect some of the cute translation attempts on signs and such, just for fun. It also illustrates why we non-native translators need native speakers to help with our SIL translations.

Our English language is certainly a challenge. A story I heard long ago: A Latin American pastor visiting the U.S. was asked about his family. His answer: “I have a wife, but no children because my wife is unbearable!” When he realized that wasn’t the correct word he added, “That is, she is inconceivable!” When he continued to get blank looks, he finally said, “I mean, she is impregnable!”

I am sure that in the Zapotec village we lived in (in Oaxaca, Mexico) when folks get together, someone will probably tell stories about things I tried to say in Zapotec that came out hilarious. I have given them hours of enjoyment!

Kris, this is classic. Also a testament to why Bible translators such as yourselves need lots and lots of checking.

I’m amazed you could write spam so well! (although maybe you could have misspelled a few more words? Ha!)It’s kind of a brain exercise to read it, never mind write it!

Lynn, As I mentioned, I didn’t write it. They’re all lifted from spam letters I’ve received.
