Last week our son-in-law Vernon died. It was after a two year and three month struggle following a motor scooter accident from which he never recovered. I described it last week in my other (writing) blog, Blank Slate<\/em><\/a>. It was two days after that posting that he passed, his wife Allison by his side. I mention it here because many of you have known about all this, either by my mentioning, or being aware of Allison\u2019s famous blogs documenting it. That long processing has in fact made the final outcome somehow more gentle, more ready to face. The name of her\u00a0blog is Sans Oxygen.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0I recommend it to you.<\/p>\n

But here I want to take a moment to introduce you to the late Vernon Adams as typographer. This is an art-focused blog and typography is an art.<\/p>\n

The irony is that Vernon was more of a fixer than a rider. He was good with his hands, and mind, at many things.<\/h6>\n

Vernon came into our lives a little over a decade ago. He and Allison met online through friends with mutual interests. The complication was that Vernon lived in England. How they overcame all that and married is an interesting story but not my focus here. They lived for the first several years of their marriage in England\u00a0where Vernon pursued a master\u2019s degree in typographical design at the University of Redding. Eventually they moved to America (San Clemente) as he found his way in the world of new type\u00a0design and production. In fact, his business name was NewTypography<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As a freelancer, his main client was Google. His unique (and influencing) passion was \u201cfree typography,\u201d making new fonts that anyone could download and use.<\/p>\n

\nEach was designed and produced by Vernon.\u00a0A number of others were left unfinished, now being completed by other designers.<\/h6>\n

If you click around on the link you\u2019ll see examples of all the letters, the rest of the font families (italic, bold, light, etc., etc.) as well as options to download.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be amused at the cleverness of sentences and paragraphs supplied\u00a0to illustrate the fonts. To me they could all be the first lines of very intriguing short stories or novels.\u00a0For the font\u00a0named Oswald<\/em>, for example,\u00a0\u201cMy two natures had memory in common,\u201d sounds like a great beginning for something.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of Oswald<\/em>, it\u2019s a typeface that\u2019s seen millions of downloads and become one of the most popular Google fonts on the net. The same goes for Oxygen<\/em> and a number of\u00a0others. And Vernon was just getting going.<\/span><\/p>\n
