In these, no one place is identified. Rather it&#8217;s a generalization, an idea, an aesthetic that&#8217;s reminescent\u00a0of many places. As often as not, the image is straight from the mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Lake_Light\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1492\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Lake-Light.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Lake_Light\"><em>Lake Light<\/em>, oil on canvas, 20&#215;30<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>As is usually the case, the name is given after the birth. Here I was painting a design, not a lake. But the lake appeared and that in sunlight. So there it is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/River_Runs_Through_It\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1493\" title=\"River-Runs-Through-It\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/River-Runs-Through-It.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/River_Runs_Through_It\"><em>River Runs Through It<\/em>, oil on canvas, 34&#215;40<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>This is a fairly large piece that came to be over another painting that wasn&#8217;t going anywhere. That one was of a man and a woman, also\u00a0abstracted. In a sense they gave this one birth, and only the creator knows what parts are from the old and which are new. It&#8217;s like a river that way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Autumn_Trees\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1494\" title=\"Autumn-Trees\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Autumn-Trees.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"510\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Autumn_Trees\"><em>Autumn Trees<\/em>, oil on canvas, 16&#215;20<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>Sometimes, when I include these on the website, it&#8217;s a\u00a0dilemma\u00a0knowing whether to put them on the &#8220;Places&#8221; (landscapes) page or the &#8220;Abstracts&#8221; page. With these I&#8217;ve gone with &#8220;Places,&#8221; as there&#8217;s plenty of &#8220;reality&#8221; still suggested. There&#8217;s precedent: Claude Monet was a landscape painter,\u00a0albeit\u00a0with such strong impressionism they were almost abstract.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Early_Winter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1495\" title=\"Early-Winter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Early-Winter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"505\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Early_Winter\"><em>Early Winter<\/em>, oil on canvas, 16&#215;20<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>I suppose it&#8217;s the season we&#8217;re in and the one approaching that suggested the titles to this and to the previous. As I was painting them, they didn&#8217;t seem to represent trees at all; that is until I put in the vertical\u00a0wisps that became &#8220;trunks.&#8221; It&#8217;s all about color and contrast abstracted together. But nature often does the same thing, and more powerfully yet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/California_Hillscape_2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1496\" title=\"California-Hillscape-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/California-Hillscape-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"505\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/California_Hillscape_2\"><em>California Hillscape 2<\/em>, oil on canvas, 16&#215;20<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>Californians will recognize this and the following from drives or walks through the hills. The name, &#8220;Golden State,&#8221; may have come from the gold rush, but it may just as well have come from the wonderful color that covers the ground. That, with the rich sap green of the live oaks, makes for a tranquility that is golden indeed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/California_Hillscape_1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1497\" title=\"California-Hillscape-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/California-Hillscape-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/California-Hillscape-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/California-Hillscape-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/California_Hillscape_1\"><em>California Hillscape 1<\/em>, oil on canvas, 20&#215;20<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>Early California painter William Wendt originally painted this scene. And this is my take on that. It&#8217;s simplified, smaller (and a good deal more affordable). Here is just a hint of that in the distance. One thing about man-made objects as opposed to organic, they&#8217;re always angular. Nature is freer. Together the contrast can be pleasing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Reclining_Blue\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1499\" title=\"Reclining-Blue\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/egallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Reclining-Blue.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/painting\/Reclining_Blue\"><em>Reclining Blue<\/em>, oil on canvas, 18&#215;24<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>Speaking of pleasing shapes of nature, I thought I&#8217;d include one human form. This one illustrates how the approach to painting can be the same whatever the subject. This one is also recent, and represents others like it that will be on display in the November show.
