Here’s a tribute to Winter while we’re still in its midst. Being a Southern Californian, winter is something I visit, like over Christmas, in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where we went for family and frost and a great abundance of snow. After that, it was back in the studio with a lot of white paint.

Greetings of the New Year to you. Last blog featured paintings with gold; this time it’s “works on paper.” If this seems a commentary on the direction of the economy it’s only coincidental. It’s become an annual event. Once a year we open our house and studio to all for a weekend of art. In a sense it’s an inventory sale.

Commissions have been in focus these last several months, and of those, a good number have been portraits. Portraits: always the most challenging of paintings. Many artists won’t attempt them, and it was awhile before I would. Now it’s a regular thing. Once again, Anne Moore will be the featured artist at Sandstone Gallery in Laguna Beach. The opening is tomorrow evening, during the ever-festive Art Walk. Come if you can. Also this month Hyatt Moore will be featured as guest lecturer-demonstrator at the San Clemente Art Association. You’re invited to that, too. There’s a show this evening in the city of Orange and you’re invited. Gallery on Glassell in “Old Town” has been carrying my work for a number of years. I know it’s short notice, particularly for those of you a thousand miles away, but I thought I’d at least share a few pieces that will be on display. Call it a moment for aesthetics and be enriched.

Last time we featured Anne’s work at the Laguna Festival of Arts. The show continues through the summer. Don’t miss it. This weekend only there’s another show featuring my work (along with others’). The long anticipated show is upon us and you’re all invited. The Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach is a prestigious event where every year hundreds of artist compete and only a few new ones are accepted. After years of applying for both of us, this year Anne was accepted. Take five minutes and see why.

Every year about this time the San Clemente Art Association sponsors a plein air competition. Painters, including me, have been painting San Clemente this week which will culminate this Saturday with a show and sale. Included will be at least one ala prima painted during the “quick draw.” Take a minute and check it out. (Or take an hour and drop by on Saturday.)

Here are a few more of the “Women from the Back” theme before we move on. Not that this theme will ever be done, having enough intrigue to last a life time (as with everything else). Once again, the paintings here had their genesis in London’s National Portrait Gallery, and in the case of one, some preliminary thumbnail sketches are shown that were used in their making.
