I call them personal only because I wrote them; they might apply to anyone, any time. That&#8217;s the nature of a proverb.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They all come from a reading of Genesis 42-45, the account of Joseph, then second in command in Egypt, and his brothers, still not knowing his identity. The number following the proverb is the reference that inspired it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If famine persists in the land where you live and grain abounds elsewhere,<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t just sit and look at each other, get off your asses (or on your asses) and go! \u00a0<em>(42:1-2)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Money is as good as the goods you need,<br \/>\nIf the goods exist and you&#8217;re willing to spend. \u00a0<em>(42:2)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you must invest all, hold one back,<br \/>\nWhy risk destroying yourself? \u00a0<em>(42:4)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a story, and life, only the reader and God sees all,<br \/>\nThe players see only their part. \u00a0<em>(42:1-6)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A dream revealed to the dreamer<br \/>\nMay be best, for a time, kept concealed. \u00a0<em>(42:7, 9)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A spy, though useful, is inherently a dishonest person. \u00a0<em>(42:11)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Treat the weaker brother with respect,<br \/>\nHe may, in time, rule over you. \u00a0<em>(42:8)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is a way to test a liar<br \/>\nAnd the wise will find it out. \u00a0<em>(42:14)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A fearer of God will be just,<br \/>\nA fearer of God will be gracious. \u00a0<em>(42:18)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Learn from others: The guilt of your justified passions<br \/>\nCan haunt you the rest of your life. \u00a0<em>(42:21)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Does not Justice say, \u201cI will have my day,<br \/>\nAnd for every act there will be pay\u201d? \u00a0<em>(42:22)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The accessors to crime will suffer right along with the others. \u00a0<em>(42:22)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A blessing at first, is really a curse,<br \/>\nIf supplied by one who deceives. <em>\u00a0(42:28)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When things are extreme, very good, very bad,<br \/>\nWe credit God, or fear him.<br \/>\nBut he&#8217;s in fact as much in the middle. \u00a0<em>(42:28)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A lie, once told, must be perpetually retold,<br \/>\nBut nature will right itself, and the liar finally exposed<em>. \u00a0(42:32)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even the blessed can feel he&#8217;s the cursed<br \/>\nWhen everything turns against him. \u00a0<em>(42:36)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If possible, be over-honest;<br \/>\nIt&#8217;ll stand for you later. \u00a0<em>(43:12)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be rash in your promises,<br \/>\nYou may have to carry them out. \u00a0<em>(43:9-13)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Beware of extraordinary gifts;<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s something meant by them, and you don&#8217;t know what. \u00a0<em>(44:2)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You cannot know the plans of God,<br \/>\nFor he works them out long before. \u00a0<em>(45:5)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Man only thinks he&#8217;s doing the action,<br \/>\nBut it is God all along. \u00a0(45:8)<\/p>\n<p>Raise a child to be God fearing and good,<br \/>\nAnd (s)he&#8217;ll be your care in old age. \u00a0<em>(45:9-10)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If a man&#8217;s ways please the king,<br \/>\nEven his family will be honored. \u00a0<em>(45:17-20)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know you could write your own proverbs?
