{"id":3009,"date":"2012-07-13T18:12:48","date_gmt":"2012-07-14T01:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/blank-slate\/?p=3009"},"modified":"2015-05-05T15:17:40","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T22:17:40","slug":"depending-on-folly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hyattmoore.com\/blank-slate\/2012\/07\/13\/depending-on-folly\/","title":{"rendered":"Depending on Folly"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><\/h6>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another from our Ecclesiastical Sage: <strong>I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.<\/strong>*<\/p>\n<p>Well, Duhhh&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Did it take the wisest man in the world to come up with that?<br \/>\nLight&#8217;s better than dark.\u00a0Pretty black and white.<br \/>\nIt hardly needs saying.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, there&#8217;s quite a bit of evidence that we don&#8217;t all see it that way.\u00a0In fact, it seems a lot of our society\u2013and economy\u2013is dependent on folly.\u00a0Maybe we need folly in order to keep certain occupations and even whole systems in place.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been in areas of the world where night watchmen are kept busy\u00a0patrolling all neighborhoods. They say a third of the population is hired by a third of the population to protect itself from a third of the population.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose it steadies the\u00a0economy, providing occupation for all.<\/p>\n<p>Without a little folly, what,\u00a0for example, would newspapers have to talk about?<br \/>\nAnd what would the courts do?<br \/>\nOr the police?<br \/>\nOr personal body guards?<br \/>\nOr the\u00a0military?<br \/>\nOr the whole\u00a0penal system?<br \/>\nOr lawmakers?<br \/>\nParole officers?<br \/>\nDrug dealers?<br \/>\nLate night revelers?<br \/>\nAll manner of counselors?<br \/>\nPsychiatrists?<br \/>\nAmbulance drivers?<br \/>\nPawn brokers?<br \/>\nLawyers?<br \/>\nPimps?<br \/>\nPornographers?<br \/>\nProstitutes?<br \/>\nArbitrators?<br \/>\nBailiffs?<br \/>\nBouncers?<br \/>\nBill collectors?<br \/>\nStrippers?<br \/>\nGaming dealers?<br \/>\nPalm readers?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the list could go on and on.<\/p>\n<p>And let&#8217;s not forget about half the writers and artists.<\/p>\n<p>(Of whom I am one.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">__________________<br \/>\n<\/span>*Ecclesiastes 2:13<\/p>\n<p>Next: <em>A Critique of Moi?<\/em> Coming Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, folly is for fools.
