It’s the day of looking back and looking ahead. Actually it’s the latter that’s capturing my attention this morning. But it’s all part of a continuum, and a review can be healthy. In fact, this week we shared a meal with a dozen of our closest friends and followed it with\u00a0a “go-around,” each sharing their year’s high points, and next year’s hopes. Each was followed by remarks of affirmation and encouragement by others in the circle. It was great.<\/p>\n

Just because I have mine already written out, I’ll share its essence here. You might enjoy it, but more, I’m sharing it as model for you to consider doing the same. Do it today, being the transition day. And then share it with a friend. Or don’t. Remember what Socrates said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” And each of ours is very worth living.<\/p>\n

High points of last year:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Travels–<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\n Oregon for art making<\/span>
\n Italy for art\u00a0history<\/span>
\n Idaho for art making<\/span>
\n Dallas (twice) for art making<\/span>
\n Chicago for art making\/presentation<\/span>
\n Anchorage for art making\/presentation<\/span>
\n Ft. Lauderdale for art making\/presentation<\/span>
\n Phoenix for art making\/presentation<\/span>
\n Ojai and various day trips just for break and togetherness with Anne<\/span><\/p>\n

Accomplishments–<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\n Published another four books<\/a><\/span>
\nPainted three major mural projects<\/span>
\n Various (12) public-painting events, some while speaking<\/span>
\n New bathroom remodel and various\u00a0house and grounds enhancements<\/span><\/p>\n

Reunions–<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\n Of siblings (with spouses, 10 of us), on anniversary of parents’ passing<\/span>
\n Of children (5), their spouses (4) and grandchildren (16), in Kansas City [Vernon not in attendance]<\/span>
\n Another great “personal growth”\u00a0retreat [among same friends mentioned above]<\/span><\/p>\n

How has life changed since a year ago–<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\n More focus on helping with son-in-law Vernon<\/span>
\n Daily reflections in writing each morning, a great benefit<\/span><\/p>\n

Lacks–<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\n A regular income stream<\/em> from art still an evasive mystery (though income continues . . . also a mystery)<\/span><\/p>\n

Hopes\/Goals for next year:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Additional book projects<\/span>
\n More and better paintings<\/span>
\n Another international trip for art history (France)<\/span>
\n At least another art-making trip (somewhere)<\/span>
\n A 50th anniversary commemoration (coming up)<\/span><\/p>\n

Spiritual Goals–<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\n To learn what it means that the eye be single<\/em> (that the whole body be full of light)*<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s it, at least in synopsis. Yours will be different,\u00a0but you might use the same categories. You’ll likely be pleased with what you discover. Life, once examined, is very worth living.<\/p>\n
